When you have your act together, you decide, "This has to happen" and it becomes everything that's important. It automatically shoots to the very top of your priority list. There are a number of factors associated with anxiety-related conditions. These are family history, stressful life events, thinking style, poor coping skills, individual personality and lack of social support. Research has shown that conditions like anxiety and depression often run in families. As yet, no one really knows how much this is due to genetic influences and how much to learning anxiety-type behaviours and thinking style from family members. Even if you are born into a family that is predisposed to anxiety, it does not automatically mean that you cannot overcome the condition if you develop it. Much of our behaviour is learnt and, if a behaviour or way of thinking can be learnt, it can be unlearnt and new behaviours developed if the individual is prepared to put some work in. Everyone experiences stressful periods from time to time. Sometimes these events take the form of bereavement, job loss, or relationship problems. Any event where we feel threatened is likely to spark off feelings of fear and anxiety. Psychologists discovered that even pleasant experiences such as having a child or gaining a promotion could be stressful as they also contain change; too much change, even positive change, requires a degree of emotional readjustment. People who think in certain ways are more likely to feel anxious. Such thinking styles include the ability to discount the positive (always putting down or dismissing anything positive that is said) or maximizing negative events by being overly pessimistic and dramatic. The more negative the thinking the more anxious a person is likely to feel, particularly when the thoughts are based on perceptions of threat. Older adults' brains activated much more for positive images than negative ones. Many of us have some excellent coping skills that we can call on when we need them. However, most of us have some coping strategies that are unhelpful such as drinking, smoking, or eating too much as a way of comforting ourselves. We are losing not just our children to this disease, but brothers, sisters, parents, friends, coworkers, and neighbors. The body count from overdose deaths and of productive, rewarding lives lost to addiction continues to rise. We have yet to implement solutions that will deliver what is needed to overcome the addictive forces that are eroding our societies. A major reason why we are failing is a dogged attachment to ideas and efforts that have not worked in beating the plague of addiction. Addiction is still here, unabated. The money we are paying--in this country and throughout the globe--is not just vast; it has sadly often been wasted on unsuccessful campaigns of drug control and on education efforts that rely on stressing the negative consequences of drug use. Your basic personality type is likely either to help or hinder you when it comes to dealing with stress and anxiety. In the late 1960s, cardiologists discovered what have come to be known as Type A and Type B personalities and, more recently, a third has been added called the Hardy Personality. Type As are ambitious, competitive, hard-driving and more likely to ignore stress symptoms. They tend to go down rather spectacularly when they become overloaded. Type Bs are more laid-back and find it easier to keep matters in perspective, whereas the Hardy Personality seems to have all the attributes of a Type A but without the susceptibility to stress. Over the years research has demonstrated that people with good support systems in the form of family and friends are far more likely to ward off the effects of trauma. The more people we have to talk to the more we are protected from the full effect of dealing with stress on our own. A lack of a social network really shows itself in times of crisis. Could I have learnt to be anxious? I believe that the biggest problem with so many of the psychoactive drugs, those that work on our brains and minds, is that they are so effective. In immediate and powerful ways they change how we feel, how we think, and how we relate and behave. That's why we use them, why "just saying no" to them is naive and ineffective, and why the dilemma of drug taking, legal and illicit, has become one of the most dominant societal problems we face in the twenty-first century. The appreciation that drugs serve a human purpose, and that we are all human, is fundamental to ending the drug epidemic we are in. This perspective, as commonsensical as it may appear, has not informed drug policy and practice in this country.
