Still, the psychiatric needs of the men we're seeing this morning stretch far beyond what a brief conversation can provide. It appears that this is the first time many of these men have had any mental-health interventions or support at all. What the jail's mental-health program is able to provide is not anywhere close to the wraparound services of housing, food, medication, substance-abuse treatment, and social support that so many of them need. But it is more help than they were getting from the community before they were arrested. This may feel safer and more familiar to you, but it won't solve your problem. In fact, it removes you from the problem. Nonintrusiveness While being approachable and warm, your mothering environment also needs to be nonintrusive. To intrude is to force oneself on someone without invitation. Intrusive people try to get close prematurely, when they aren't wanted or needed. Those with detachment injuries often have a detached and intrusive mother in their background. This kind of mom didn't connect with her children but forced her needs, thoughts, and feelings onto them in the guise of relationship. It was her way of controlling them. The children of this kind of mother generally respond by shutting down and going away emotionally. But there are many ways you can be brave. Few make the headlines. Few earn medals. Fewer still make the cover of Time magazine. However, every act of bravery stems from a decision to make a stand for something that's bigger than yourself and more important than your emotional safety, comfort or pride.
