No matter what you say or reveal about yourself, this person is on your side and wants to help, even if she disagrees with or disapproves of what she hears. Warmth and empathy provide the basic groundwork of safety and trust that are missing in the adult who had an absent/detached mother. They extend a bridge, making it possible for the broken part of the individual to cross over in his own time. If you are a detached person, warmth and empathy may be difficult for you to find in others because you look instead for just the opposite. You might find it easier to connect to another distant person, a critical parental figure, or some information-laden type, or you might find a legalistic church to provide you with a sense of structure away from your feelings. Living your life fully -- purposefully, passionately and wholeheartedly -- is a life-long journey of learning to embrace your vulnerability and accept your fallibility, all the while trusting in yourself that you were born for a mighty purpose and are stronger than anything you ever face. If this article helps you to see this truth more clearly, even in some small way, then it has served its purpose. In doing so, you've helped me to serve mine. For that I'm deeply honoured and immensely grateful. Live purposefully Ten building blocks for living bravely Decide what you stand for I was at university at the time of the massacre that took place in China's Tiananmen Square in 1989 -- I was the same age as many of those who stood up to the tanks, soldiers and mighty military apparatus of the Chinese government. I remember being in awe of their bravery, particularly that of the young man standing his ground in front of an enormous armoured tank, an image that became iconic when it was broadcast around the globe. And I think it's fair to say, I never have been. When we start working in a new job or role we mix mainly with co-workers in our department or those at a similar seniority level as us. As we stay longer in a company, opportunities arise to expand our network simply through promotion and tenure. We may work with virtual teams including people based interstate and overseas. many people do you know outside your area of expertise?

Awakening to who we are created to be is the first step in letting go of all that holds us captive. I have seen wild turkeys throw them-selves up against a five-foot high wrought-iron fence trying to get out of the same yard they flew into only moments before. In moments of panic--such as when my wife would chase them out of her flower beds--these creatures forget that they have wings! We, too, have forgotten something: we are created to be unconditionally free. As a result of our spiritual forgetfulness we continue to throw ourselves against life, trying in vain to find for ourselves what can only be found through the conscious remembrance of our True Nature. FREE YOURSELF FROM THE CAPTIVITY OF THE FALSE SELF In some ways the work of letting go and living from our True Nature is simple. If we want to know the course of an uncharted river, or map a region of an unknown forest, we must enter into and explore that new world. We would think it silly for two people to argue about the nature of a remote valley--what life forms it holds, sustains, or denies--if these two people live near its entrance but never dared to explore it! Yet this is much of the way things are today when it comes to the hidden heart of higher spiritual consciousness. You know all those people who go searching for enlightenment by climbing up a mountain to visit a guru? I hired a helicopter to take me up the mountain. I found the guru and asked him to tell me his secrets. The guru said it would take years for me to learn them. So, I grabbed him by the throat and held him over the cliff.

He soon started talking. He looked around at the excited crowd with bloodlust in his eyes. Before we had a moment to process what he was saying, he was off on another chain of random associations. There are ghosts in the hallway of the hotel. It's fucking haunted. You may be unable to release the outdated image of the patchouli-scented, laid-back navel-gazer, so far from the efficient person you want to be. This is why appreciating the biological breakthroughs of meditation is so crucial. Many people have such misconceptions before they see how much sharper they get navigating busy lives from a calm emotional place. I explained to Mister C how neuroscientists have documented that daily meditation improves the ability to focus. Though Mister C had no comment about anything New Age, he did go for the biological reasons to meditate. Despite all the glitz of his life as a performer, he was a pragmatist. As is true for many of my patients, once a technique's science is substantiated, they're comfortable with it. Previously, all Mister C knew was how to drive himself; Discomfort can motivate; To begin, I started Mister C with the short meditation I'll describe below, and taught him others I'll cover later. Symptoms that are raised do not always get a thorough investigation. Montgomery sometimes must take stabs based on hunches. Because she is charged with evaluating so many detainees in such a compressed period of time, she has no choice but to do so. The quiet ones worry me, she says, telling me a story of a detainee in the jail who would not speak for days. So one day I just said, `How are the voices?

Montgomery is relentless in her attempts to connect and provide help within the constraints of this environment. Still, the psychiatric needs of the men we're seeing this morning stretch far beyond what a brief conversation can provide. It appears that this is the first time many of these men have had any mental-health interventions or support at all. What the jail's mental-health program is able to provide is not anywhere close to the wraparound services of housing, food, medication, substance-abuse treatment, and social support that so many of them need. But it is more help than they were getting from the community before they were arrested. This may feel safer and more familiar to you, but it won't solve your problem. In fact, it removes you from the problem. Nonintrusiveness While being approachable and warm, your mothering environment also needs to be nonintrusive. To intrude is to force oneself on someone without invitation. Intrusive people try to get close prematurely, when they aren't wanted or needed. Those with detachment injuries often have a detached and intrusive mother in their background. This kind of mom didn't connect with her children but forced her needs, thoughts, and feelings onto them in the guise of relationship. It was her way of controlling them. The children of this kind of mother generally respond by shutting down and going away emotionally. But there are many ways you can be brave. Few make the headlines. Few earn medals. Fewer still make the cover of Time magazine. However, every act of bravery stems from a decision to make a stand for something that's bigger than yourself and more important than your emotional safety, comfort or pride.
