What can you do to address your need that isn't imbibing alcohol? Maybe you need to eat, let off steam, reach out to connect with someone, have a nap or a bubble bath, or do something lovely and nurturing. Next, think: Delay and distract.

Get busy to get your mind off the craving. I used to clean the house hard-out. Other people go for a run (good for the thighs! Do whatever you need to in order to take your mind off the urge. Cravings tend to come in waves, so if you delay and distract for long enough the intensity will pass and you can relax a little. That's how many grams of carbohydrates are in a slice of white bread. If something contains fewer than 13 grams of carbohydrates, you know that it can't raise your blood sugar higher than a slice of white bread would. A slice of white bread has a glycemic load of 100, so the glycemic load of the food in question must be less than 100. For example, if the package ingredient list says that a square of chocolate contains 4 grams of carbohydrates, under the worst-case scenario--if you absorbed it as fast as white bread--it couldn't raise your blood sugar as much as a slice of white bread would, simply because it doesn't contain enough carbs. You can be more exact than that. Because the chocolate square has less than half the carbs of a slice of white bread, you can conclude that its glycemic load is less than half that of a slice of white bread--less than 50. That means you could eat two squares and not exceed a glycemic load of 100. You still don't know how fast the carbs would be absorbed--the other ingredients in the chocolate (fats in the chocolate, for instance, or nuts) could act as sugar blockers and reduce the glycemic load further.
