Occasionally, maybe every four months or so, I do a time assay. I sit down and write out my typical daily schedule. Then I write down the things I'm doing that aren't on the routine schedule. I experience myself as being very busy but I need to remember that I spend much of my time doing things that are elective. There are twenty-four hours in a day: my day, your day, every day. Some people get by on less sleep than others, but basically we each have the same twenty four hours. And we can only cram so much into twenty-four hours. We folks with ADD tend to try to do too much. So many things seem so appealing or so necessary. We have a hard time prioritizing and we tend to try to do them all. But on one of my time assays I realized I needed to give up chess. That doesn't mean I'll never play it again. I do still look at the daily chess problem in the paper, but I no longer play on the internet and I no longer subscribe to the daily chess problem. I'm no longer trying to learn the openings. I'm not very good at chess, and I realized that I never will be. Although I was enjoying chess, I saw that if I want to exercise and fish and do prison ministry and learn the guitar and study Spanish, something was going to have to go. So, goodbye to chess. We find so many things interesting and it's hard to accept that we can't do them all. It's hard to let go of something. So we have trouble making a choice or a decision. We procrastinate on doing anything.

We have trouble choosing an occupation or which book to read today. Every choice made involves giving up some other options, and we have trouble doing that. Be specific - don't just say what a nice home' oryou look nice'. Add what, specifically, is nice - their hairstyle or the furniture they've chosen. Notice the work someone does. It could be someone who serves you in a shop or cafe. Make a positive comment about their work or business. Praise a parent for their child. When the opportunity arises, compliment someone on the abilities or behaviour of their child. I spent many years of my career in the pharmaceutical industry, with a great deal of travel. During one trip to New Jersey from California, my company supplied the housing, food, and transportation for over five hundred people who attended the long training. All of the meals were prepared in bulk with a setup very similar to the way food is displayed on a cruise ship. After a couple of days of eating buffet-style meals, I began feeling sick to my stomach. I decided to meet with the onsite company staff nurse about my sudden stomach pain, severe bloating, and feelings of nausea. She could not find a cause and recommended that I stay hydrated, eat very light foods, and take antacids for the rest of the training. Try to approach changing your sleep strategies in the same way. Incorporate these strategies into your life gently and patiently, and let go of the need to make yourself sleep. Once all the right conditions for sleep have been met, sleep will often come on its own. If you feel you are not able to achieve better sleep despite trying many of these strategies, it may be valuable to seek help from a clinician specialized in sleep training. Sleep hygiene is about optimizing all the factors that help with the quality and length of sleep.
