I have been invited to participate in unethical projects as well as activities that are quite legitimate, but do not belong to me to do. I would only be hurting myself as well as others if I said yes to something that is out of integrity or not in accord with my purpose. If someone is headed over a cliff in their car, you do not assist them by jumping into the car with them. Or perhaps they are not going over a cliff, but they are simply driving north while you are going south. You serve best by declaring, This is my right place or direction, and I must be true to it. We do not need to make the other person wrong for going in their direction, but neither must we invalidate ourself for walking the path to which we are guided. One way to know whether you are exercising judgment or discernment is to observe the kind and amount of emotion accompanying your action. As our friendship grew, I shared my discoveries about the overlap between ADHD and Asperger's syndrome with him. He, actually, is the impetus for this article. Over the years, he has urged me to publish my discoveries so that parents everywhere could help educate their family physicians about these disorders. And as a result of his encouragement and feedback, Dr Elliott has become an important member of this project. Because of his expertise in the area of medications, it seems most appropriate for him to explain pharmacological therapy to you. Because of his unwavering support for this project, I've asked him to do so in his own voice. Classically, medications were felt to be of little, if any, value in milder forms of autism. This was often simply an illogical extension of their not being useful in more severe cases of the autistic spectrum. In fact, when some medications were tried, they frequently seemed to exhibit a paradoxical response in the Asperger's patient--for example, marked overstimulation with the psychostimulants. Therefore, encouragement of further use of medications was abandoned early. It needn't be lunch or anything fancy; Say (but don't yell), Hi there, everyone, I brought [food item]. Make sure you use the word everyone, which sets the tone that, at least for the one hour that you're in that conference room, you are all one organism.

Pass the snack to the person on your left, and tell everyone to take one and pass it around. Don't leave the food in the middle of the table and tell everyone to help themselves. That defeats the purpose. It's that circular motion of passing the treats that creates literal roundness. It ignites flow and connection in the room, like a relay race or passing the baton. It's a way of making people pay attention to others--at least the people to their left and right--which creates awareness of the hive mind. This is effective even if people don't take the food. Judgment sets up a disturbance in the emotional body; Actions proceeding from judgment leave you feeling ill-at-ease and unresolved. There is a lingering sense of victimization, bitterness, or resentment You do not feel whole, nor do you see the other person as whole. You are haunted by a sense of incompletion. The incompletion, however, is within you. You have chosen a guide other than peace, and sooner or later you must go back to the point at which you stepped into separation, and make a different choice before you can move on with integrity. Discernment, on the other hand, proceeds from peace; You proceed from action rather than reaction. As you are inspired to serve, the universe lines up to support you. You can say no without ire or apology, for you realize that as you are true to your course, grace enfolds you and everyone involved. However, more recently it has been determined that a number of medications may give very significant benefit to the Asperger's patient. Both antidepressants and stimulants relieve many of the problematic symptoms associated with these disorders. However, it must be remembered that medications do not treat the core difficulties of these disorders;

Dr Fred Volkmar, a respected researcher in autism, echoes this view on the effectiveness of pharmacological intervention, saying, Treatments developed are effective relative to certain disabling symptoms, but core' problems (eg, in social relatedness and communication) appear less responsive to medications. <a When using these medications, we can make no mistake by starting with too low a dose and moving up too slowly--other than patient frustration, of course. However, we can make mistakes by beginning with too high a dose or by moving up too rapidly.
