We now turn our attention to personal mindfulness practice and its effect on teaching the Yoga program. It's great to have some one who can help us deal with our ADD. The more they understand ADD the less frustrated they will be with us and the better they can help us. The more they understand and help us the better we function. The better we function the less reason they will have to be frustrated with us. And the better organizing strategies we have the better we can function. In the current literature, emphasis is placed on the embodiment of mindfulness by the teacher (for example, Kabat-Zinn et al., n.d.; Crane, Kuyken, Hastings, Rothwell, & Williams, 2010; McCown et al., 2011). Segal et al. (2013) state that to offer Yoga, teachers "require the depth of practice and perspective that comes only from knowing, from the inside, what mindfulness practice is and what it is not. This means that teachers of mindfulness are practitioners of mindfulness in their daily lives. Without a teacher having an ongoing mindfulness practice, whatever is being taught is not Yoga" (p. 9). We would agree and add that a personal practice enables the teacher to know, on an experiential level, the variety of states that emerge from the practice, which of these may be problematic and need attending to, when the practice is useful for dealing with difficulty, and when it is not. Be sure to incorporate exercises that are developed by physical therapists and trainers who understand your abilities. Daily exercises will help improve flexibility, stability, and muscle and bone strength. Make sure that you have assistance in exercises when you need it, and understand your abilities to stand or lie on the floor.

Here are some general guidelines in developing your fitness program: Aim high: Never allow your limitations to stop you. Be sure only to work with professionals with specific expertise in training and working around your injuries and/or restrictions. This is an absolute must to prevent any additional injuries. Be sure to take an active role in planning and the development of your weekly fitness schedule. Always feel free to ask questions and or share any concerns you may have with your trainer. Remember, your trainer is your fitness partner--when you achieve a milestone, he or she does, too. When you are training, remember to always take your time with each set of exercises. Take each set of your activities nice and slow. Aim for quality only, during each exercise routine. If you want to raise an issue with someone, choose your time carefully. You are not likely to get their best response if either of you is hurried, tired or really stressed about something else. Try asking something like this: "Is this a good time to talk?" If the person says "no," try asking "When would work better for you?" If another person raises an issue with you at a time when you do not feel ready, it's OK to tell them that you would prefer to talk at another time. For example, you could say: "I need some time to think about this. When would be a good time for us to talk about this tomorrow?" It is generally accepted that the influence of a personal mindfulness practice on teaching an MBP is an essential component to developing competence and best practices. What we know less about is how it influences and shapes teaching, what it looks like, and how we can measure it. In a relatively small quantitative study undertaken by Grepmair et al. (2007), psychotherapists in training who practiced for thirty minutes at the start of each day in the Zen tradition were more positively evaluated by their clients than other therapists in training who did not have a daily practice. In a qualitative study of Yoga, Van Aalderen et al. (2014), looking at the role of the mindfulness teacher from the perspective of the teacher and the participant, found that four major themes emerged from their analyses. In this study, the majority of the participants and all the teachers stated that it was vital for the teacher to have a meditation practice so that she embodied the practice from her own experience and demonstrated such mindfulness qualities as nonjudgment, acceptance, and compassion. In addition, and related to embodiment, both participants and teachers mentioned the importance of how the teacher utilized language and the quality of the voice. While these preliminary studies and our own experience support the idea that personal practice is important for the teacher, more research is needed. For example, this morning he divided us into two groups, the rich and the poor.
