But if someone is able to move into the incubation phase, the sharp inhibitory surrounds which d-mode employs to keep activity focused and corralled, and which tend to turn gentle valleys into functional canyons, are relaxed, and the wider distribution of activity across the brainscape allows a greater number of different foci to become active at the same time. The pattern of activation in the low-focus brain resembles more the one produced by a handful of gravel flung scattershot across the surface of a still lake, than the linear sequence of epicentres created by the skimming' of a smooth flat stone. Now if the residual activation from the earlier, preparatory stage remains - if the problem has been put to the back of the mind without being forgotten entirely - the neural clusters that correspond to the problem specification will still be primed. Jay met her his junior year in high school. It turns out when you know who you truly are, others are more drawn to you and want to know you. A girl who loved music and film as much as he did talked to him after band practice one day and after that they were inseparable. Until the day she got accepted into her dream school, knew she didn't want to be in a long-distance relationship, and cheated on him with one of their friends. All of Jay's past fears and insecurities came roaring back, and he was filled with doubt, discouragement, and thoughts of ending it all to avoid the pain. Thankfully, Mr. Erwin was able to help him see how he was being attacked once again and reminded him that God has a plan. If she was the one for him it would work out. If not, it meant there was someone else that God has for him, and he would meet her in the right place at the right time. Jay realized how easy it was to forget the lessons of the Five D's and get discouraged and defeated. The deeper faculties of the mind could read the motives of the man she wished to marry; In other words, her subconscious mind dramatized the answer through the personality of her brother, as it knew very well she would listen to the supposed voice of her brother. She phoned me at the Drake Hotel and said joyously, I got my answer! I was always hunting for something more. It turns out that appreciation is a capability we can ignore or develop. When I finally was able to be open in a relationship, it allowed me to appreciate all sorts of aspects of my life beyond my relationship. As creative people go about their business, the normal exigencies and incidents of daily life will keep activating thousands of concepts and clusters throughout the brain. If one of these should inadvertently facilitate a link between previously unconnected, but primed, parts of the network, there may be just enough added activation to make an image or a metaphor exceed its threshold and shoot into consciousness - producing an insight', an illumination. Finally, during the phase of elaboration or verification, the focus of activation may narrow again in order to explore in more detail the implications that have been opened up. If creativity is associated with forms of brain activity that are dim and diffuse, and if this is because, in such a state, a greater number of different foci can be simultaneously active, then we might expect that forms of unconscious awareness - subliminal perception - would show the same increase in diversity of associations. Specifically, if an idea is activated unconsciously, its associative ripples may extend out more widely than if its activation is concentrated to a degree that produces clear consciousness. There is some evidence that this is the case. Recall the study by Bowers and his colleagues (in article 6) in which subjects tried to find a single word that was a remote associate of each of fifteen words presented in a cumulative list.

Spence and Holland have used the same type of materials to examine the effect of unconscious perception. Their subjects were given a list of twenty words to memorise, of which ten were remotely associated with a single word such as, in the Bowers example, fruit'. The other ten words were of the same general type and familiarity, but were not linked together in this minimal way. At first his ex-girlfriend's actions made him feel like something was wrong with him. It made him question himself. Was something wrong with him that she would do this to him? His identity was being attacked. Erwin helped him see that her actions had nothing to do with him. His identity should never be defined by what others say or do but rather by the God who created you. The experience made Jay rely more on God and develop a deeper, more trusting relationship with Him. He found more focus for his films and more peace when thinking about what the future held. Kay stopped wearing long-sleeved shirts when the cuts healed on her arms. While the light scars were still there, they served as a good reminder of the fear and anxiety that had sabotaged her in the past and the truth that had set her free. This inner voice says, Yes when giving its approval and, No when it disapproves. She says the inner voice is always right. This doctor has, over a period of time, conditioned her mind to believe that God is guiding her in all ways. Now she is experiencing the automatic response of her deeper mind when she needs an answer. Clairaudience in history Socrates openly admitted that he was constantly directed and guided by his daemon, which he characterized as an inner, monitory voice to which he listened and obeyed. This inner voice told him what not to do and when it did not speak to him, he regarded its silence as tacit consent.

In Plato's Dialogues, we read that this daemon, or intuitive voice, gave Socrates extraordinary knowledge overshadowing his five senses. Another striking instance of clairaudience is that of Joan of Arc, the remarkable visionary heroine of France. History informs us that she depended completely upon the direct messages or voices of her subconscious mind. Toothaches take up a large part of the old healing traditions and we count ourselves lucky to be able to have access to modern dental practices. One of the old stories from the Alps tells of a man who lies screaming and moaning on the ground because he broke his leg. He encounters a dwarf, who asks him why he is screaming so loud and the man points to his leg. The dwarf answers unconcerned: Oh, is that it? The way you were screaming, I thought you had a toothache. Even if no one enjoys a trip to the dentist, this story very clearly demonstrates how things looked in the past. People considered the pain of broken bones harmless in comparison to a toothache. I am mentioning the following spells merely for historical reasons. We all know that we should immediately see a doctor when we have a toothache--and even better, before one develops. Welcome bright light Love, in its old-school version, seems to love similarity. Study upon study bears this out. People are most drawn to others who share roughly their same level of physical attractiveness, their same degree of financial wealth, their same physical abilities, their same lot in life. Each person, then, tends to have a small, circumscribed set of loved ones whose beauty, wealth, health, and ability are not too different from their own. Your attraction to similar others seems to keep the playing field level. Yet attraction like this also stratifies. Seeking similarity in your companions invites endless social comparisons as you continually size people up, judging whether they're worse off or better off than you.
