Not moving enough hasn't always been an issue for me. Prior to developing my autoimmune diseases, I enjoyed hiking and even longer backpacking trips. While it was a challenge, the beautiful walks in nature and the pride in carrying everything I needed on my own back were huge rewards, not to mention the chance to connect with friends. As my body became more and more malnourished with undiagnosed celiac disease, I had less and less ability to perform physically at previous levels. I started noticing that I was breathless, light-headed, and shaky only 10 to 15 minutes into a workout of any kind. I even remember my husband urging me to eat energy bars not only following a workout, but even before doing anything! I simply had no reserves, and I became afraid of experiencing those sensations. Eventually, I avoided movement almost altogether. Those who don't already own this gift can cultivate it. During an unfortunate visit to the hospital (for kidney stones), my doctor was beyond compassionate. I appreciated his humanity and personal attention. Went through it myself, he said. it was, empathy through experience. how we gain most of ours. I'm thinking that should be a prerequisite for getting a woman pregnant, he continued. No, passing a kidney stone, he said. I was compassionate in the room with my wife because I'd felt like I'd gone through something similar. Well, sort of, I said, not empathetic enough to betray my gender's claim to the worst pain ever. Imagine yourself as a child. What do you look like and what age are you?

What are your main feelings? What is your world like, and what do you like to do? What are the things you're most afraid of? What causes you the most pain? Are you worried? If so, what are you worried about? Keeping all this information in mind, imagine this younger version of yourself in a safe space that brought you joy (perhaps that space was school, your home, your childhood neighborhood, or nature). Imagine for a moment yourself as an adult walking into the scene and sharing that space with the younger version of yourself. There is no such thing as a safe tan'. <a href=''>A</a> tan is a sign of DNA damage. <a href=''>It</a> is the result of a chemical reaction in your body as it tries (and fails) to protect itself from UV light. <a href=''>Brands</a> selling SPF that use the termsafe tanning' are at best misleading and, at worst, clueless. The appearance of age spots or pigmentation when you're older is down to those teen family holidays, not the tan you got last year. Traditionally, chemical' SPFs absorb the light. <a href=''>Physical</a> sunscreen, contrary to popular belief, is notnatural'. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, most commonly used in natural' sunscreens have been shown to potentially be toxic (and I use the word correctly) for fish/sealife - an estimated 4,000 to 6,000 metric tons of sunscreen washes off swimmers' bodies annually with the potential to cause damage to fragile ecosystems. <a href=''>Zinc</a> oxide and titanium oxide are not biodegradable and invariably use nano-technology, which is also being investigated by cancer research bodies because of its possible links to cancers in humans. <a href=''>If</a> your preference is to usenatural' SPF, your closest bet is a non-nano' oxide. <a href=''>But</a> it is also possible that at this point, she may want to discuss with her doctor reducing or stopping the medication, while maintaining the daily light therapy at the earlier time she settled into in the hospital. <a href=''>What</a> if, on Day Four, Carol is feeling only a little better, or no better at all? <br /><br /><a href=''>In</a> that case, her doctors will advise her to go through a second cycle of wake therapy followed by early recovery sleep. <a href=''>This</a> time the recovery sleep will begin three hours before her usual bedtime, instead of five, but otherwise the procedure is the same. <a href=''>And</a> if this second cycle gives some additional relief but not quite enough, a third wake/recovery sleep cycle may be needed. <a href=''>Even</a> then, however, the entire treatment requires only about a week, plus a few additional days of observation. <a href='[]=<a+href=></a>'>We</a> should be careful to keep in mind that triple chronotherapy offers relief for depression, not a cure. <a href=''>If</a> Carol is typical, once she is home she will need to continue daily light therapy. <a href=''>She</a> may also be on medication, if she and her care provider find it is helpful. <a href=''>But</a> as long as she remains free of the ravages of depression, Carol will probably not worry very much over the difference between relief and cure. <a href=''>To</a> this day, I struggle with movement on the autoimmune wellness journey. <a href=''>Although</a> I am not as debilitated as I once was, I find myself having to work hard to overcome the fears that I felt around exertion while I was sick, and I often find myself trying to tackle a sense of being overwhelmed about restoring physical fitness. <a href=''>The</a> journey is complex, and some areas take us years to master. <a href='[]=<a+href=></a>'>Where</a> Are You on the Movement Spectrum? <a href=''>This</a> test will help you determine how high of a priority movement is to your healing journey. <a href=''>Give</a> yourself one point for every item on the list that applies, and then total your score and see your results at the bottom. <a href=''>SCORING:</a> Any score higher than 4 means that you may need to prioritize getting more movement throughout your day. <a href=''>To</a> ensure that you aren't overdoing it, see Exercise Assessment . <a href=''>EXERCISE</a> IDEAS FOR THOSE WITH CHRONIC ILLNESS <a href=''>Although</a> some top-level athletes suffer from autoimmune disease and still find themselves able to perform at a high level (like Venus Williams), this is rare and by far an exception to the rule. <a href=''>Present,</a> Engaged Energy <a href=''>Although</a> it's nice to be able to multitask in this day and age, there's something very attractive about a person who is present and engaged. <br /><br /><a href=''>This</a> type of energy pulsates through a situation, taking charge by grabbing hold of the moment and carrying along everyone in its path. <a href=''>It's</a> quiet, but not contained; <a href=''>Present,</a> engaged energy pays attention and is able to sense and see what is really going on. <a href=''>This</a> requires . <a href=''>The</a> Gifts of Awareness and Patience. <a href=''>Life</a> moves at its own speed, not ours. <a href=''>Everything</a> we do seems to have its own timetable. <a href=''>We</a> can't fix the past or predict the future. <a href=''>Imagine</a> that the child you is feeling the anger you're feeling right now as an adult. <a href=''>With</a> your heart full of compassion, wanting to help the younger version of you, what would you say and do? <a href=''>How</a> would you comfort your younger self? <a href=''>Perhaps</a> you'd give yourself a hug and offer support, reassurance, and comfort and just be. <a href=''>Right</a> now inside of you is the same child; <a href=''>Often</a> beneath anger is suffering and unresolved pain that are getting louder. <a href=''>When</a> you feel anger, slow down, pause for a moment, close your eyes, and picture yourself as this child. <a href=''>Greet</a> your adult self with the same care and compassion as you would the child version of yourself feeling this anger--because care and compassion can help you heal. <a href=''>Hanging</a> onto resentment is letting someone you despise live rent-free in your head. <a href=''>Motherhood</a> is bittersweet and the saying The days are long, but the years are short captures the essence of the shadow emotions of bitterness and resentment. <a href=''>Bear</a> in mind it's still technically a chemical, no matter what theclean brigade' say. The term `non-nano' means nothing to the FDA, but it may be better for you.

GOVERNMENT GUIDELINES The US's FDA standards and requirements when it comes to SPF formulas and labelling are different from Europe and Australasia. these guidelines can make a difference to a sunscreen's effectiveness. how to make sense of it all, and what to look out for. the USA, SPF labelling is a requirement because the FDA says it is a drug. In Europe, it is classed as a cosmetic and therefore stating SPF classification is not mandatory, it's just for information. said that, European manufacturers are allowed to use seven proven UVA filters while the FDA in the USA only allows three, technically meaning that a European product has the potential to be more effective than an American-made product. SPF is only relevant to UVB light. On a Friday evening, Larry went to the chronotherapy center, in a downtown hotel. I got there at 10 PM, and you have to stay up until 6 PM the next day. It was rough. It was really hard to do. I drank coffee, and I had cigarette breaks, and I was splashing water on my face. There was a nurse who stayed up with me first, and she was very nice. Then there was a psych graduate student, then there was another nurse, then another psych student again, and then a nurse. I was getting anxious around 7 AM on the change of shift. I got scared that I would be manic again. The next day--that's Saturday--you go to bed at 6 PM, he continues. If you have an autoimmune disease, chances are that you are going to do better with moderate exercise instead of intense exercise. The good news is that this moderate exercise has been shown to be just as health promoting as intense activity, without the risk of injury, burnout, and stress.
